Indulge in the rich, creamy goodness of French Onion Potatoes, featuring layers of tender potatoes, sweet caramelized onions, and a bubbly cheese topping—perfect for any gathering!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese (shredded)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or dried)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for about 20 minutes until golden brown, stirring occasionally.
  2. Prepare Potatoes: Slice Yukon Gold potatoes into thin rounds for even cooking.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, mix heavy cream with half of the shredded Gruyère cheese, caramelized onions, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  4. Layer the Dish: Grease a baking dish and layer half of the potato slices at the bottom. Spread half of the onion mixture over them. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover, top with remaining cheese, and bake for an additional 20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  6. Let It Rest: Allow to rest for about 10 minutes before serving to set flavors.
